Learning how to learn again

At the end of last year I made the decision to step (some would say “run away”) from the career that spanned consulting to working as Cloud Engineer (no not the rain clouds, I did not control the weather) and finally as a DevOps engineer I had been building since I graduated from university to do a field guide course and potentially pursue it as a long term career change.

Straight into the deep end

The next morning was the first time I experienced some corrugated gravel, and I hated it immediately. And it was made even worse because I had decided to drive around in a 50 year old car.

The corrugations on the road was a nice warmup for what was going to be a very kak day. The plan for the day was to get past Upington and then figure out where to camp from there.

Let the fun begin

Now the fun really started. I had no boss, or rent to pay and my diary was all my own. I had nobody to answer to. I still had a lot to do to get ready, but I knew that no matter how much I planned I would still be figuring out a lot while I was travelling.

So I did the simple thing again and decided to plan as little as possible. The only thing I really did any planning around was how to get out of trouble. I needed to know how to get to safety if something goes wrong, and there were definitely going to be breakdowns. All I could hope for was that there would be nothing worse than a few minor breakdowns and that there would be no injuries to me.

Lets start by explaining the why

Where do I even start writing about this journey? There is so much to say about it and so much that has changed since I set off.

A good place is probably why I decided to do it. Travelling was not the only thing on the list of things to do, it was just the least stupid one. There were other things as well, but I might bring those up a bit later.

Why start writing a blog?

Simple, I want to tell stories.

There seem to be a lot of ways to do that now. It feels like we have never had more ways to consume stuff, and a blog seems pretty old fashioned compared to the current platforms.

So why not Youtube or Instagram? (or even Facebook?)

Lets use some simple bullet pointed answers (no mess, no fuss):

Youtube:

• The whole listening to my own voice and seeing my own face while editing is very off putting
• Even just talking to a camera seems very shit. I even feel awkward sending a WhatApp voice note
• But it is probably the whole “like and subscribe” thing that irritates me. This is not about chasing any kind of numbers

To answer the question: Who am I?

Just some idiot who has decided to post his ramblings on the internet.

The ramblings will mainly be about travelling and wanting to travel more.
